The Neurology of the Ying (营气) and Wei (魏气) – A Polyvagal Approach

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), “wei qi” and “ying qi” represent the body’s defensive and nourishing energies. Wei qi, the defensive energy, is said to circulate through the skin and muscles, acting as the body’s defense system against external pathogens and environmental threats. Ying qi, the nutritive energy, flows through the blood vessels and capillary beds, nourishing the tissue to support growth and repair. Both forms of qi must remain in balance for the body to function optimally. Disruptions in this delicate balance lead to illness and dysfunction.

Neuro-Somatic Emotional Mapping for Resistance

Resistance is a root-level defense state deeply tied to dorsal vagal immobilization, fear paralysis reflex (FPR), and fascial rigidity along the Run/Du Mai channels. It manifests as a psychophysical bracing pattern that prevents engagement, openness, and forward movement.

In Case of Emergency, Break Glass: Mindful Tools for a Deranged Nervous System

The recent election cycle in the US came on the heels of a global pandemic that plunged much of the world into prolonged states of confusion, fear, and isolation. As social structures frayed, waves of conflicting information eroded trust in authority and fueled skepticism toward Western medicine across the spectrum. Just as society began to recover from this destabilizing period, an intense, high-stakes political cycle in the US began, marked by aggressive rhetoric and tactics intended to deepen division. This climate, amplified by ongoing global conflicts, has kept the collective nervous system in a reactive state—locked in survival mode and braced for continued turmoil.

The Battle for the Soul of Medicine: How Industrial Interests Shaped Healthcare

At the dawn of the 20th century, medicine stood at a crossroads. The Industrial Revolution had ushered in technological breakthroughs that promised to transform healthcare, yet medicine itself remained a fragmented and diverse field. In the United States, medical schools ranged from small institutions teaching traditional herbal and naturopathic remedies to emerging research universities experimenting with laboratory science. Patients could choose between a homeopath, an herbalist, or an allopathic physician. It was a messy, pluralistic system—but it offered choice.

Neuro-Somatic Mapping: People-Pleasing & Intrusion (The Dark Twin of Empathy & Compassion)

💡 Core Issue: Overextension into others' emotional or physical space—seeking validation or control through excessive attunement.

💡 Goal: Reclaim internal boundaries, reduce hyper-vigilant attunement, and shift from external validation to self-anchored presence.

Deep Dive Into Psychopathy: The Standalone Structure & Its Interactions With Other Defenses

💡 Core Issue: Psychopathy is a strategic detachment from emotion, vulnerability, and interpersonal reciprocity in favor of power, control, and dominance.

💡 Key Insight: Unlike other character structures, psychopathy is not primarily a “felt” emotional experience—it is a cognitive and autonomic reorganization that prevents the full experience of certain emotions.

COVID as a Global Trauma Trigger: Chronic Sympathetic Dominance is a Global Issue

The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a global trauma, pushing much of the population into chronic "fight-flight-freeze" responses. This reactivation floods the brainstem with signals of danger, an alarm state with heightened sympathetic activity that when prolonged becomes a way of life. Recognizing and treating chronic sympathetic dominance involves understanding the myriad subclinical patterns associated with chronic fight-flight-freeze” response.

Chronic Sympathetic Dominance and Fascia: Vagal Tone is Visible!

© 2024 J. Moffitt. Registered U.S. Copyright Office. Polyvagal Acupuncture®.

Contributions from mental health and trauma professionals like Peter Levine, PhD, Dr. Stephen Porges, PhD, and Svetlana Masgutova, PhD, illustrate the role of the nervous system and the biochemical processes involved in trauma. However, their profound insights have not yet translated into effective treatment solutions for many. Several factors contribute to this challenge: a persistent mind-body split in mental health, prohibitions against mental health providers physically interacting with patients, inadequate insurance coverage for counseling, and an over-reliance on medication. These issues highlight the complex landscape of mental health care, where pharmaceutical approaches often fail to provide comprehensive solutions.

Integrating TCM and Modern Anatomy: A Multidimensional Approach to Body Structure and Function

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the body is understood as a series of interconnected systems, each with unique pathways and functional layers that encompass physical, energetic, and physiological domains. Classical concepts like the six divisions, the three jiaos, and the Eight Extraordinary Vessels offer a structured approach to balancing qi flow and organ health. However, as we explore these classical frameworks with modern anatomical, neurological, and fascial perspectives, a richer understanding emerges—one that connects ancient insights with contemporary scientific models.

This exploration aims to bridge these TCM frameworks with the
